The Girl and the Ginseng Boy 小紅和小綠

By Pan, Ren-Mu
Illustrated by Cao, Jun-Yan

The story is based on a northeastern Chinese folk tale about the spiritual Mt. Changbai. It is said at the foot of the mountain locates a village where people live by hunting ginseng. A little girl with red clothes is the only child in the village and thus she feels lonely for having no siblings or friends to play with. Until one day, a boy with green clothes visits there and immediately he becomes the best friends of the girl. However, the girl's parents become aware of her confusing behavior, because they never see any child show up in the neighborhood. Eager to find out the truth, they give a needle with a long thread and ask the girl to stick it to the clothing of her friend. By following the thread, they are led to the base of a tree where they dig out a gigantic ginseng root that could make them a great fortune... Since that day, the boy never comes back to the village, even though the girl keeps waiting for years and years.

The original story was published in 1974 and was one of the earliest picture books printed in color.

Illustrated with Chinese brush painting, this classic story demonstrates the subtle life lesson and the distinctive ginseng culture in Chin ese folk tales.
